War merchants behind unrest in Balochistan: Zardari

SLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has said the merchants of war do not want peace in Balochistan as they thrive on conflicts.

He made these remarks during a meeting of the PPP senators, MNAs and MPAs from Balochistan at the Aiwan-e-Sadr on Tuesday. The president and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani jointly chaired the meeting.

Chief Minister Balochistan Nawab Aslam Raisani, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Babar Awan and Senator Mian Raza Rabbani were also present on the occasion. The president observed that the merchants of war used the Mumbai incident as pretext to hike the India’s defence budget by 30 per cent.

Presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar said the meeting with the PPP parliamentarians from Balochistan was part of the consultative dialogue to evolve consensus on various issues relating to Balochistan.

The president told the PPP parliamentarians from Balochistan that no Pakistani agency was involved in the killing of Baloch nationalist leaders. He said remedial political measures are being taken to improve the conditions in the province.

President Zardari referred to his recent visit to Quetta and deplored the unfortunate incident in Turbat that contributed to increasing tension. He said the government would ensure that the culprits were brought to book.

He said such incidents were engineered by those who wanted to sabotage the government’s efforts to bring peace and stability to the province. The president said the government has taken special measures to address the financial problems of Balochistan and has announced a development package of Rs47 billion for the province. “The completion of the Gwadar project has created jobs and generated economic activity in the remote areas of Balochistan,” the president added.
